Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker competitor in the world by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to discover everything he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the adverse comments from other people destroy his ambition of being one of the best poker competitors in the world.
He began playing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a teaching opportunity and winning wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an immeasurable love for poker. He says that he is learning every single day and is very abashed about his achievements. Phil knows he makes blunders every single game of poker and always aspires to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some big tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a regular basis.
